Underwriting Manager, Commercial Banking Middle Market Specialized Industries
The Government, Healthcare, Higher Education, and Not-for-Profit (GHHN) credit team at JPMorgan partners with the sales organization to provide lending products and services to our targeted client base.  As an Underwriting Manager for GHHN, your primary responsibilities are managing a team of underwriters, approving credit, and handling a portfolio of select clients.  The portfolio covered by this team consists of operating and specific primary exposures (less than $5.0MM). You will appropriately assess the risk in the portfolio, ensuring that the team diligently manages the portfolio (i.e. renewals, modifications, managing the credit metrics), and meets customer deadlines. 
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Help build and maintain a team of credit underwriters to effectively support the objectives of the business while maintaining the highest quality of risk management. 
  • Effectively understand, communicate and implement the firm’s risk appetite across the various industries we serve and in all geographic locations covered.
  • Establish and oversee the resources and workflow process to manage new and renewed deal flow and other portfolio management related activities so that all deadlines are met.   
  • Performs necessary credit analysis, due diligence, and review of documents for new transactions and monitors/manages ongoing performance/risk of accounts within his/her assigned portfolio of GHHN clients.
  • Taking ownership of the portfolio, acting with a sense of urgency, doing whatever it takes to effectively get the job done. 
  • Utilizing excellent credit skills to author well thought out and concise analysis of relationships using appropriate structure and identifying key risks.
  • Ability to quickly and accurately evaluate smaller relationships to determine if the risk profile is acceptable and recommend simple structures that adequately protect the bank while not over engineering the transaction.
  • Flexibility and the ability to identify larger opportunities and to effect warm hand-offs of same to other appropriate  team members
  • Demonstrating excellent communication skills both internally and externally and using those communication skills to effectively solve problems.
  • The ability and courage to voice your opinion in a clear, concise manner and to defend that position with management.
  • BA/BBA/MBA and completion of a major corporate or commercial bank credit training program (or the equivalent corporate banking/corporate finance experience) and typically a minimum of eight years experience in commercial banking/lending which might include credit, structuring and marketing experience
  • Significant accounting and finance knowledge and commercial banking experience
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written skills, interpersonal skills, and analytical and problem solving skills
  • May or may not have prior experience in supervising with ability to manage, coach and motivate a team of underwriters who are at varying levels of development.
