The Applications Developer Lead is a role responsible for the development and design of the Marketing Analytics Platform (MAP) within JPMorgan Intelligent Solutions, supporting Consumer Banking.  This platform provides a state of the art analytical technology stack to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of marketing campaigns.  A key goal is to execute cohesive marketing strategies across lines of business and channels at the customer level.  The MAP platform leverages Hadoop, Greenplum MPP relational database, Tableau for dashboards and reporting, and best of breed ETL technologies for ingesting and transforming data.


This individual will lead a team of dynamic and highly talented individuals and will contribute to the analysis, design, build and implementation of all projects utilizing this platform.


Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Fully understand and direct all technical aspects of MAP design, working closely with the business and IT leadership
  • Understand and apply JPMC development standards and best practices
  • Provide leadership and coaching to other developers on the team
  • Greenplum database development (loading, creating aggregates, SQL, performance tuning, etc)
  • Lead the design and development of a Hadoop-based data lake/reservoir, data refinery (ETL), and ad-hoc analytic capability using data wrangling tools
  • Write Linux/UNIX shell scripts (e.g. BASH) to execute ETL processes
  • Build end-to-end ETL processes that ingest, transform, and publish highly refined analytical data sets
  • Construct data models and tables on relational databases to ingest raw data & design and implement aggregate tables and views supporting high performance reporting
  • Work closely with data modelers/architects to evolve the data structures for MAP
  • Review other developer designs, code, documentation, and implementation plans for quality and adherence to standards and process
  • Adhere to JPMIS/JPMC project delivery methodology and documentation requirements to deliver in a predictable and auditable manner
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, MIS or technical area required – may accept any suitable combination of education, training and experience
  • 10+ years of industry experience with an emphasis on applications development, ideally in the marketing analytics space
  • Experience operating as a technical or team lead, or experience providing significant coaching
  • Minimum of 4+ years of diversified experience working database management systems such as Oracle, Sybase, and Teradata.  Experience with MPP databases (especially Greenplum) is a significant plus.
  • Experience with Hadoop and its various components in an enterprise setting (beyond academic and hobby use) is strongly preferred.  Knowledge of HBASE and Spark is a plus.
  • Strong programming experience in UNIX/Linux Shell Scripting
  • Experience writing and tuning complex analytical queries with SQL
  • Experience working in an analytical domain such as data warehousing, business intelligence, or data mining
  • Experience or familiarity with at least one common ETL platform.  Experience with streaming patterns is a plus
  • Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills to drive projects to successful conclusion.
  • Ability to communicate complex problems, status, and progress to management is critical
  • The individual must be self-starter, independent, motivated, detail and quality oriented, proud of the product(s) he/she develops, and an excellent team member
  • Excellent problem solving skills are required
  • Experience in the web/digital/mobile, financial services, or marketing industries is a plus
  • The individual must have experience working in test-driven and highly iterative environment
  • Ability to analyze data and business problems to help drive solution designs
  • Understanding of database performance tuning is a plus
