Cloud Site Reliability Engineer – Associate

Global Technology Infrastructure (GTI) is the technology infrastructure organization for the firm, delivering a wide range of products and services, and partnering with all lines of business to provide high quality service delivery, exceptional project execution and financially disciplined approaches and processes in the most cost effective manner. The objective of GTI is to balance both business alignment and the centralized delivery of core products and services. GTI is designed to address the unique infrastructure needs of specific lines of business and the demand to leverage economies of scale across the firm.
Cloud Development is a newly formed team responsible for architecting, designing and engineering a new, cutting edge, cloud platform for transforming our business applications into scalable, elastic systems that can be instantiated on demand.
This role will require the Site Reliability Engineer to work alongside the Cloud Onboarding and Architecture team to operationalize, automate and deploy at scale all layers of the Cloud stack to satisfy the CloudDev system requirements. This is expected to range from the lowest level (network fabric) through to the hardware, OS, Cloud hosting platform and on into the design and implementation of higher level services such as the IaaS, PaaS and SaaS layers.
Once implemented, the candidate will typically be expected to provide some higher level production and technical support in the case of a serious P1S1 Outage. They will also provide comprehensive consultation to business unit and IT management and staff at the highest technical level. They will work closely with CloudDev management to identify and specify complex business requirements and processes. Additionally, they will research and evaluate alternative solutions and make recommendations.
Responsibilities shall include:
  • Work as part of the Cloud Dev Infrastructure team to ensure appropriate business measures are defined and documented
  • Create technical design recommendations for developing and integrating new software and system technologies – from the physical layer through to the virtual layer – per written specifications; test, evaluate, engineer, implement and support said technologies
  • Evaluate service level issues and suggested enhancements escalated by support to diagnose and address underlying system problems and inefficiencies - engage third party suppliers on support issues as required
  • Review and influence new and evolving design, architecture, standard, and methods for operating services and systems
  • Respond to and resolve emergent service problems; design tools and automation to prevent problem recurrence
  • Participate in software and system performance analysis and tuning, service capacity planning and demand forecasting
  • Drive technical innovation and efficiency in infrastructure operations via automation designs
  • Create processes that enhance operational workflow and provide positive customer impact
  • Design systems management solutions using automation and self-repair rather than relying on alarming and human intervention
  • Avoid re-inventing the wheel and prefer appropriately simple, repeatable solutions over more complex and failure prone ones
  • Help develop tools and utilities to provide short term solutions to immediate needs as required
Preferred skill sets:
  • Excellent documentation and communication skills – needs to be able to clearly articulate complex IaaS / PaaS / SaaS concepts to people new to Cloud Platform Engineering and Architecture
  • Deep technical mindset and knowledge of modern enterprise infrastructure.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills - desire to solve complex problems at scale
  • Fluency in development, algorithms and systems design architecture
  • Software engineering, system administration, systems engineering, network engineering
  • Understanding of how commodity servers, operating systems and networks function, perform and scale
  • Deep and broad understanding of services and architecture required to build computing platforms
  • Ability to design, articulate, and implement modern, web­scale distributed systems
  • Knowledge of networking, security, and DNS
  • Knowledge of Unix/Linux operations and troubleshooting
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as python, perl, shell, java, c#
  • Excellent understanding of IaaS and virtualization – service orientated architecture designed around the delivery of Infrastructure components as a service
  • Good programming skills – should be able to code, leverage APIs, and understand security, authentication and data structures
  • Strong understanding of the software development methodologies, processes and principles
  • College degree in related technical or business area, specialized training and/or equivalent work experience
  • OS: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.x / 6.x
  • OS: Windows Server 2003 / 2008 / 2012
  • Orchestration: OpenStack Heat or VMWare VCO workflow design experience
  • Minimum 5+ Server Engineering / Development / Architecture experience
  • Minimum 3+ years Server Support work experience (incl. 3rd/4th line support
Strong Plus:
  • Experience with Linux Containers (lxc, docker etc)
  • C / C++
  • Presentation Skills
  • Implementation Management of Datacentre Deployments (global)
  • bash/tcsh/csh/sh shell scripting
  • Authentication Schemes, single-sign-on systems e.g. Kerberos
  • Systems integration skills (Interoperability)
